EMPLOYMENT

Graduate Research Assistantship and Postdoctoral Fellowship Available at UC Berkeley

A number of positions are open for Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows at the Nano-scale Science and Engineering Center (NSEC) at UC Berkeley.

Graduate Students

We seek highly motivated students with the solid scientific strength in one of the following areas: engineering, physics, chemistry, materials science and biological sciences. Both graduate research assistantships and university fellowships are available.

Postdoc Candidates

Postdoc candidates should possess an earned Ph.D. in Physical sciences and Engineering, (degree from US, Japan, or Europe is preferred). Excellent written English and oral communication skills are required. The postdoc positions are in the following areas:

I.  Nano-optics, plasmonics and Metamaterials: An essential research objective in our group is focused on the nanophotonics and plasmonic structures and devices. The research involves theoretical and experimental study of the physics underlying metamaterials and other plasmonic-based devices applications. We seek for creative postdocs with strong physics background in electromagnetics /solid state physics /nonlinear and quantum optics. Strong optical experimentalists are sought with experiences such as but not limited: semiconductor lasers and related materials, imaging, FTIR, NSOM, and Nonlinear optics.

II. Chemistry/Material science – We are seeking for candidates with hands-on background in material chemistry (colloidal, electrochemical, self assembly, etc) and bio-chemistry. Specialties we are looking for include nano-structure synsthesis, functionalization and characterization. Direct experiences with III-V, II-VI quantum dots, nanowires and metallic nano-structures are of a great advantage. Candidates must have good communication skills and should be  willing to work in a highly collaborative group with materials scientists, physicists and engineers.  Broad knowledge of processes and materials compatibility of bottom-up (chemistry based) and top-down fabrication (e-beam and optical lithography, FIB etc) is desired.

III. Devices and Applications: We seek for candidates with strong experience in (1) semiconductor laser materials and devices (III-V or II-V), microscopic laser design/fabrication; (2) optical imaging technology (new imaging microscopy and lithography, etc), as well as for biological applications (STORMS, STED, etc.);

IV: Acoustic band gap materials - The present project aims to developing a novel acoustic band-gap structure. The candidates should demonstrate thorough understanding of the propagation of acoustic wave in microstructured media and the hands-on experiences in acoustic measurement (20 KHz-GHz).

Applicants should send a full CV via email to:

NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMIES
The National Research Council of the National Academies will offer competitive awards in 2009 for independent postdoctoral and senior scientific research to be conducted in residence at participating U.S. government laboratories. Opportunities for research are in all areas of science and engineering and many are open to non-US as well as US citizens. Awardees design their own projects to be compatible with the overall interests of the sponsoring laboratory. Annual stipends for recent Ph.D. recipients range from $41,000 - $70,000 depending upon sponsoring laboratory and are appropriately higher for additional experience. Application deadlines are February 1, May 1, August 1, and November 1. Applicants must initiate dialogue with prospective advisors at the lab as early as possible, before their anticipated application date. Applications must be submitted online directly to the NRC. Detailed program information, including instructions on how to apply online, is available on the NRC Web site at www.national-academies.org/rap. Questions should be directed to the National Research Council at (phone) or . Qualified applications will be reviewed without regard to race, religion, color, age, sex or national origin.
